Simon Woolham

Simon Woolham is a London based artist who uses drawing, performance and a multitude of other media to explore “occupied spaces and the narratives that surround them”.

Woolham’s graphite rubbing project, Drawing Out The Canal (2019), is an exploration of the Kennet and Avon Canal towpaths in relation to a 4-day walk. The drawings act “as a way of transporting to a place, it’s memory and the experiences surrounding it”. Woolham then purposefully reconstitutes these rubbings into compositions that talk of his sensory experience in relation to the place and builds up a narrative that celebrates its history and memories. By cutting out individual parts, sticking them in elsewhere, and introducing his own observational drawing elements to the process he creates a powerful immersive space, the rubbings taking on an almost 3-D character as they splay out onto the floor and the ceiling. We share the same interest in exploring the embedded histories of a place through a haptic experience and I am going to experiment with compositional arrangements by taking my rubbings of the print room and creating a large composition on a wall. This could be an exciting future direction for my work. I may even draw back into these compositions and have them taking on more sculptural elements or overhanging off the walls and ceiling like Woolham has in his work.
