EXHIBITION OPPORTUNITIES

On this page I will discuss my participation in group shows, what I have learnt about professional practice and how it has informed my work.

‘SUMMER SHOW’ AT SPIRAL GALLERIES

I was delighted to show my 'Cracks’ rubbings at the ‘Summer Show’ open call at Spiral Galleries in July. I was hoping to deck the walls with the cracks; however, a more conservative approach was called for due to the limitations of the space.

I received some good feedback, especially people encouraging me to really increase the scale of the rubbings I was doing up until that point. I decided that might indeed be a good avenue of inquiry.

In October I had another opportunity to show my work in an exhibition with fellow art students. It was called ‘Unveil’ at a space rented for the purpose in Shortditch in East London. It was curated by fellow MA drawing students Jingyu Niu and Thea Zhou. The show was organised by Swanfall Gallery, a new start up gallery by fellow MA drawing student Pandora Wang. The exhibition included recorded interviews and people gave some really good feedback about the work.

People remarked that they could feel the different layers of the engrained surface, almost as if they could touch it. It was so physical, people even mentioned rubbings in relation to it. The decision to display it without a frame made for an earthy feel, that grounded it in the raw elements that brought it into being. In all it felt like it was really successful in terms of sharing the haptic experience of imprinting, which was one of the aims of the work. I was recommended to look up the idea of ‘Psycho Geography’, which is a way of exploring geographical environments and how they affect us on an emotional level. I plan on doing more work that involves printing machinery in the print room as a result of the positivity I received concerning the work.
